Head Coach: Phil Vargas
My name is Phil Vargas and welcome to the 2019-2020 crew season! I am excited to bring a new competitive level to the team this season and put our athletes in position to excel on the water. For the novice athletes and parents, we look forward to meeting you and familiarizing you with our sport through our Green Days, Winter Conditioning, and Spring Rowing. For our experienced team members, let’s be ready to go to work!
Our team rows out of Bull Run Marina and we have one of the largest organizations in the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association (VASRA). We aim to continue to grow and field a large number of boats at local regattas. Our team goals are to build confident and committed student-athletes within a team that is perennially competitive at the state and national levels.
This will be my fourth year as a coach with the team and second year as head coach. As a coach, I love teaching athletes about training, strength conditioning, and mobility to build the strongest and most efficient crews possible. I am an educator in Fairfax County and have also spent time as a personal trainer and group exercise instructor. I was first introduced to the sport of rowing as a freshman at Lake Braddock before joining the team as a sophomore and going on to row at the University of Virginia. Throughout my rowing career, I have coached both men and women and been in every seat in the boat. In rowing, there is no replacement for hard work, positivity, perseverance, and the will to give 100% of yourself to your crew. Let’s have a great season!
Coach Gary Goddard has been with Lake Braddock since the 2011-12 season. He started coaching novice and varsity woman at George Mason University in the mid '80s. After fifteen years away from the sport, he resumed coaching at the high school level.
Coach Gary has coached both the men's and women's side, novice, varsity and lightweight rowers. He has coached many successful crews winning numerous medals at the state championships.
Coach Gary is retired and when at the the boathouse, can usually be found in his "office"-the picnic table outside the erg room.
Coach Lauren has coached for Lake Braddock for three years, both varsity and novice women. She currently teaches Studio Art & Design at Mount Vernon High School. She received her BFA in painting and her Masters in Art Teaching at George Mason University.
Coach Lauren is originally from Rochester NY, where she rowed all four years in high school for Pittsford Crew. During that time she won New York State Championships in the women’s 8 which led to a bid and competed at Nationals in Cincinnati. Following High school she was recruited to row for George Mason’s D1 women’s team during which winning their NCAA Conference Championships in Philadelphia. She rowed for two years until injuries ended her competitive rowing career.
After a successful competitive career, Lauren began coaching at Lake Braddock while attending graduate school which allowed her to combine her love of rowing and teaching. She cannot wait to introduce novice rowers to this beautiful sport and continue to grow this amazing program!
Coach Katie has been with Lake Braddock Crew since the 2015-16 season, coaching the novice girls. Katie is currently a special education teacher at Lees Corner Elementary School and obtained her masters in education from George Mason University.
Katie is originally from Connecticut where she rowed all four years of high school. After her high school rowing career, she decided to continue her growth in the sport by joining the team at George Mason. Katie competed at the division 1 level for all four years of her undergrad. Her senior year of rowing was when she decided to try a new aspect of the sport by coaching!
Coach Katie is so excited to begin this season and watch the growth of the team throughout the coming months and years.
My name is Hailey Warman, this is my fourth year as a rower on the team. Looking back as freshman rowing in the novice eight I definitely did not expect to fall in love with this sport in the way that I did. I am excited to help spread my love for the sport this year.
In this sport there is one feeling that is shared by all, the heart pounding, legs pumping, adrenaline that courses through your veins as your boat zips down the race course. Every stroke getting you closer to the gaggle of people you know are cheering you on. These are things that makes every bead of sweat and every grunt as you push out that last rep worth it.
Since the beginning, crew has helped me keep my head on straight throughout high school. It has given me friends I know I can always count on, and been the escape I sometimes needed. Crew has done so much for me over the years, and I am excited to give a little something back this year as a captain.
I am Brendan Roberts it’s my fourth year rowing. Throughout my rowing career I’ve been bow. My freshman year I was on the State Champion novice eight, sophomore year I was on the lightweight eight, junior year I was on the first four. Outside of rowing I hang out with friends and work as a lifeguard at a community pool.
My name is Shanon Boston and I am one of the captains of the women’s crew team at Lake Braddock. I joined the team in my sophomore year and am excited to be entering my third year as captain. I love the atmosphere of teamwork and togetherness that the crew team emanates and wish to show our team’s values as a leader throughout this season. I can’t wait to recruit new novices to the team and share our experienced rower’s passion for the sport with all of the new athletes. I really enjoy spending time with my teammates during winter conditioning, camp, and the spring season, and look forward to another great season on the water!
My name is Lars Mermagen, this is my fourth-year rowing with Lake Braddock. I’ve also rowed three seasons with Resilient rowing and looking to continue rowing in college. My junior year I rowed in the first four men’s boat and we advanced to Nationals held in Ohio. After high school I plan to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice. This year I’m looking forward to growing our program and teach new recruits about rowing.
